Taufik Hidayat successfully became the first Indonesian athlete to hold two prestigious titles at the Olympics (Athens, 2004) and the 2005 World Champion from the International Badminton Federation (IBF). Opik, Taufik's nickname, was born in Bandung, West Java, August 10, 1981 to Aris Haris and Enok Dartilah.
His father then put Opik into the SGS badminton club led by Lutfi Hamid in Bandung, where he was mentored by Lie Sumirat.
Taufik started his career as a badminton athlete. Dozens of successful titles achieved by Amy Gumelar's husband. He is recorded as winning the Indonesia Open badminton event six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006). Plus won the Thomas Cup (2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006) and the Sudirman Cup (1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005). Taufik also holds the men's singles title at the Asian Games (2002, 2006). However, Taufik's best career score that made his name known to the world was when he won the 2004 Athens Olympics against Seung Mo Shon from South Korea.
He is dubbed the legend of Indonesia men's singles badminton. Taufik Hidayat is called the king of backhand smash.
